I have an 88 ranger and I want to put in a 5.0 out of a mustang I have and the motor itself is fuel injected. I was contemplating leaving it fuel injected but it seems kind of tricky but I want the extra power and reliability fuel injection offers. I also want to leave it 4 wheel drive and a manual but I'm not sure exactly how to do that. If someone could give me some advice that would be great.

What are you going to use the truck for? Daily driver, weekend driver, serious 4x4, etc? Each build is different as you'll see when surfing through this forum and others. Your budget will determine how you do your build.

I know nothing about fuel injection because I have a carb motor. There are a ton of guys on here that know a lot about fuel injection.

The 4x4 is a little different and adds a few more items to work through. If your going to use headers you'll have to either build your own, use a set from James Duff, or maybe someone on here has found another set that works. You not only have to get around the steering, you have to get around the front driveshaft as well.

As for the trany I used a NV3550 out of a jeep because its a 5spd. I drive my truck on the highway so I needed that extra gear.

Again, do your research, get a game plan together of what you want to accomplish, and have fun.

Do you have all the wiring and computer for the engine as well? If not you could adapt the to the 2.9L computer to batch fire the 302 like the early EFI trucks. I'm sure there are issues there, so having/finding a factory setup would be the easiest and cheapest, or go aftermarket. If you are going to get into serious engine modification and don't have any smog program in your area the cheapest and easiest solution would be to carb it. A lot will come down to what you want to pay for. As far as the manual, there are a few ways. The easiest would be to pull a 5 speed from an F150 (M5OD-R2). It's pretty much plug and play and the best all around if you are going to drive it a lot, you will need a fullsize t-case though. Aside from a T-5 in a mustang you aren't going to find any sporty truck 5 speeds and the tailshaft adapter to use a t-case on the T-5 is no longer in production.

Joey, do you have a build thread or anything explaining the NV3550 swap? That sounds like a great idea.

Advance Adapters sells a kit, I've made the same kit they sell. It adapts the 3550 to a Ford bellhousing using 0.750" thick aluminum plate and uses the Ford flywheel and plate, but a Chevy clutch disc and a special pilot bushing. (I put a Ford 5.0 into a 2K TJ)

I believe this is everything.

Advance adapters is where I bought all the adapters to hook the trany to the bellhousing and clutch http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/pn-712544/ .

I did buy the adapter for the trany to the stock TC from advance adapters as well but I don't see it on their website. I found one here http://www.polyperformance.com/shop...g-Warner-1350-T-Case-Adapter-Kit-p-20684.html

I bought the dust shield from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard.

Here's a few photos of everything. http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/album.php?albumid=136

I hope this helps. I really enjoy this trany. It's rated to handle over 300ftlb and is small in size. I can roll down the highway in 5th gear at about 75mph at around 2300rpm.

Another great thing for the tech library or a sticky.

Nice. I didn't even know that existed. Thanks.

Oh, by the way SVT, I'd like to see that TJ. I like Jeeps just as much as Fords.

I've got some pics of it in my ranger build thread. It's mostly of me building the motor, but you can see a couple of shots of the tj in the background...

Hey have you thought about using a ZF5? It's a 3/4 ton ford trans an if you can find one in a junk yard it will be way cheaper than a 3550 conversion! Plus it will bolt to any ford full size TC as long as the spline count matches.

Finding a ZF in a small block pattern is getting rather hard anymore especially at a decent price. Around $750 seems to be the going rate anymore for one. Unless you have a body lift you will be cutting the firewall and floor to make it fit. Reguardless they are still a good unit.
