so i got a 88 2wd ranger super cab & want to put 89 ranger 4x4 front axle setup under it
does this just bolt in
has anyone done this before?

It can be done but you need to change the crossmember under the engine
 
Also, if you are gonna go to all that trouble, don't mess with an 89 axle. That's a D-28. If you are gonna go to the trouble of a 4x4 swap at least get a D-35.
 
If you don't want to mess with changing the engine crossmember, you have two options...

1) Buy a Ranger that is 4x4 already.

2) Roll a straight axle under it.


You'll also have to change the transmission and rear driveshaft out too when you convert to 4x4. I converted a Bronco II a number of years ago, but they're easier to change over to 4x4 than a Ranger. On the BII, all you had to change was one bracket and swap the dummy transfer case for a real one.
 
There's also the frame/body swap route. Any way you slice it is pretty labor intensive.
