4x4 wont engage automatically

I have a 98 ranger. 4.0l. my truck has manual locking hubs and when i turn the knob the light on dash says its in 4high or 4low w/e i put it in, but it wont automatically engage. i have to get out and manually lock the hubs for the 4x4 to work. how do i get it back to automatically doing this?

Install factory PVH hubs again if you want it to work automatically. The trucks never came with manual hubs, they were added.

well when you got manual hubs duh you got to get out and lock them in. Keep em and get over it automatics are junk

Ok guys thx for the reply.. i just bought this truck and im new to 4x4. im fine with manual hubs, auto wud b nice. ill get over it

Seeing as the auto system on the 98-00 trucks is absolute junk and very failure prone, be glad someone has already swapped the manual hubs over.

or what you could do is swap over 95+ explorer axles and hub assemblies and then you would have a live axle which would never fail and you would have automatic 4x4

What's the NET WEIGHT GAIN to ye olde Ranger when doing that?

You can also use any 2000+ ranger front end parts to do the swap as well.

About -2 lbs. There are no hub locks just a pair of big ol' nuts to keep it all together.
