1449 definitely lived up to her nickname of “the little ranger that could” this weekend at Battle at Primm. The truck barely made it up into the trailer after being towed back to camp with more than a few bumps and bruises. Saturday the truck had a good day. Thomas felt some crab walking and originally thought that the truck had a flat or a broken rear axle. After some inspection back at camp we found only minor problems and got them fixed quickly. Sunday the truck held up and finished the race with some MAJOR issues. Not only did a rock take out the trucks driver’s side back window, but about half way through the second lap the water temperature gauge shot up to 240 degrees and it was a fight to keep the truck running from then on out. A little more than halfway through the third lap the motor died and we got stuck blocking the racecourse. Thomas tried to crank the motor over and over again but it had seized, it wasn’t until after a big push backwards and dropping the clutch we got the trucks motor to crank again and after a while of cranking it fired but made some horrible noises. From there to the end we limped the truck just praying to pass the finish line before the time limit ran out. Overall 1449 finished in 10th place!!! But simply finishing this race was a win for us (especially being a 4-wheel drive pre-runner)!
On a personal level this race was an AMAZING experience. Day one Thomas drove with his dad, Dan, in the front seat and Matt D. in the third seat. Day two I was able to run in the front co-driver seat with Matt D. in the back again. (It is fantastic to see a six and a half foot guy jump out of the back of the pre-runner, but he prefers that back seat so his knees don’t hit the dashboard LOL ☺). This is the first race that Thomas and the 1449 truck finished! I am so proud of Thomas and watching him driving was an awesome experience. He was so calm, collected and in control in an extremely intense race. This was my first experience co-driving during a race and the only way I can describe it is a 50 minute roller coaster ride that I couldn’t get off of. Don’t get me wrong, it was SO MUCH FUN, but also very intense. The about 2.5 minutes we were stuck on the race course were incredibly scary and nerve racking. Thomas at one point looked at me and told me to get out of truck. I hopped out after a few trucks passed us and the coast was clear so to speak. Thomas was laying on the horn and cranking the engine. When I heard the truck fire up again I was amazed, it felt like a miracle that the truck was able to keep going after running for a about 8 miles with temperatures between (what we are guessing) was 240 and 350+ degrees. I had about a 5.5 foot jump back into the truck and we were off. We knew we had a leak in our radiator hose as our backseat co-driver (ha ha YOU ROCK MATT) was getting sprayed with a pretty constant stream of hot radiator fluid. Crossing that finish line (even as a co-driver) was an overwhelming feeling of relief and an honor in it self. Congratulations to ALL the drivers and co-drivers who started the race and to 1448 especially!
I know I am long winded but Thomas and I would like to thank ALL the racers out there and our wonderful team. Laurie and Dan we couldn’t be out there racing without you both. Laurie you are a great team manager…thank you for your example and all you do for everyone! Dan you are an amazing driver and an awesome co-driver. Thank you for all the help on the pre-runner and for all you have taught us! Matt, thank you for your co-driver example and for forcing me to get into the truck on Sunday (HAHA).
