Ok today I was attempting to address a problem I noticed towards the end of last winter.
When I turn my 4x4 Off. I have a button btw. I can hear the relay and the 4x4 light goes off. But the 4x4 doesn't like to actually disengage. It does eventually like 10-20 seconds later with a thump.
To address this problem I figured that the shifter motor was in need of service. I took it off the truck and took apart the assembly with the contacts. All the original grease on the worm gear and that ring gear that moves the contacts around was quite old and dry. I cleaned it out of the old stuff and replaced it with new light duty grease.
I also tested the motor itself against a battery and it spun both ways hard enough to twist the motor case on the bench. And since it spun so nicely without any noise at all I didn't take the motor any further apart.
Anyways I reassembled the whole thing and took it for a drive. The problem remains. The thump when it finally lets go is quieter. but that's all.
Am I going to have to delve into the transfercase?
