okay i have a 1992 ranger xlt 4x4 with a 4 cyl. the other day i decided to take it out in the mud for a little run cause the 4x4 has been engaged for awhile i just wanted to make sure everything was working good and it was, until i was going up a small incline and i heard a clunk from the front of the truck and my 4x4 stopped working, the light still comes on and it will still go into low range, but the front tires do not spin.

Thanks,
Dusty

did ya hear any noise after the clunk?

may have toasted the hubs......what mine sounded like, a clunk at first then a light grinding noise

What do you toasted the hubs cause the same thing happen to me and i checked the hubs and they look fine

i havent cheacked the hubs but when i put it in 4x4 it seems like the hubs are locked in. idk whats wrong.

from the outside they do look fine, even when you remove them and look inside they still look fine....but when you take the "guts" out i found that the splines in the hub itself were "ground" off...

and mine were MileMarker manual hubs

But what are the odds that the both braking at the same time and how could i prevent this from happen again. You think that i could get new ones from a scrap yard

more than likely only one is shot

i presume you have a stock open dif up front, if so then one broke hub will render the whole front axle useless

in an open dif the power is sent to the wheel with the least traction ( why in drag racing with an open dif you see only one tire doin a burnout )

as for finding them in junkyards, sure ya can if you still have a D28, those are plentiful...... its the D35 in 4.0 Rangers and Expo's that are hard to find manual hubs for.

for what it is worth, the stock factory manual hubs are not exactly strong, spend the money for Warns
