i had trouble with 4 wheel drive not working. i got 4 high to work by cleanig up shift motor but 4 low will not work. can anyone point me in the right direction on where to start troubleshooting this issue:icon_confused:

If you crawl under the truck, can you hear the shift motor turn when you push the 4low button.

A possibility is that you didn't align the gear/ electronics plate thing (best I can describe it) in the shift motor when you put it back together.

Putting this in the wrong place will cause the motor/shifter to be "lost" meaning that the computer doesn't know where it is.

Or, the computer thinks you are in 4low (after you've pushed the button), but in reality, it hasn't moved enough to even get out of 4 high.

And also, search and ye' shall find.. This has been discussed many times over.

EDIT: not sure if you looked here already, but the sticky at the top of the page has alot of info: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14

In case it helps anyone, I had this problem (4wd high works, but not 4x4 low).
My problem was the Transmission Range Sensor aka Neutral Safety switch. Mine was bad, and the 4wd system didn't understand that I was in neutral when I was trying to shift into 4low. Replaced it and works good again.

I don't think you can mis-align the disc. IIRC, it's a little fool-proof. More of a problem with the old di-electric grease hardening.

But you are correct.....search.

Also make sure that your in neutral with you foot on the brake as it wont want to shift otherwise.

Yep.

It's possible to misalign the cover with the contacts on it (effectively the same thing).

Scribe a line down the side before you take the housing apart.

i did scribe aline on the housing to line it back up with. if i remember correctly when my dad got the truck 4 low was not working and he did not care but since i bought it from him i need 4 low. i did use the search here did not find anything that would help. i breifly looked at the Neutral Safety switch but would you think if it was bad it would let you start the truck in gear which mine goes not. is there any test you can do to test this.

Neutral safety switch is more than likely your problem. Mine did the exact same thing, I even tried swapping out the shift motor to one that I know worked and it didn't solve the problem. I'd focus on that first just to eliminate it from the equation, or do what I plan and swap a manual t-case into it & Bob's yer Uncle!

i would love to go to a manual shift but i can not find one in my area and if u do it is over priced

Well I don't know where yer from, but I picked mine up for $100. If you want, I'll keep my eyes open up here to see if I can snag you one, but the shipping might kill ya

if you have a manual trans, be sure the clutch is fully in, i had that issue once,( real duh moment.) almost thought i was going to have to go 20 miles to home in 4 low after not being able to get it out from using low range to pull out of a boat ramp.

My bad. I had mine apart about 2 years ago, and must have forgot that detail.:icon_twisted:
