89 B2, and i went out to check my trail cameras at my lease. got to the gate and put it in neutral, hit the 4x4 button, could hear the motor clicking, but it wont engage. hit the button 2 or 3 times, and it engaged. then it would shift in and out of 4hi/4lo no problem. drove it around for about an hour, then parked it. got back in a few hours later, and it did it again. never had electric 4x4 before, so ive never had this problem.

i might add that its about 25 degrees, with a 14 degree wind chill.

Hey, mattc113! I'm in Luther, east of Edmond. We have an okie group here on TRS you aught to join. Anyway, There is a writeup about transfer case fixes on here I believe in the tech section. I used it to repair mine that had the same problem. There is a rubber contact ring around the shift positioning post, inside the motor selector housing that starts wearing and falling apart. It can be replaced with a piece of rubber hose. It sounds like yours is right at the edge of totally going. When it does, the post can't stop in it's correct position, and so the computer can't tell where it is. It's a pretty easy fix, especially if you have it sitting on a work table like I did at the time.
The other posibility is that the electrical positioning contacts inside the housing are not contacting due to wear or grime, in which case you would need to clean them. There is a writeup on that as well. I did both and applied new grease inside the casing, while I was in there, just so it wouldn't bite me in the ^$$ later.

Sounds like electronic shift 4x4 sucks monkey bawls.

I'd replace the system with a manual one. I find it's the same amount of effort to use since pulling the stick and flipping the switch require roughly the same amount of physical effort to accomplish, but with the manual system you don't have to pray it's going to work.

do i need to swap the transfer case or is there a way to modify the current one? also, if i need to swap t-cases, what ones do i need to use?

You would have to find a manual transfer case, either a BW1350, or 54. If you can find one attached to the same trans that you have it makes collecting the "extras" a lot easier.

ok, i'll start looking, thanks.

If you happen to run across an 88 or 89 with a manual trans and t-case, if you grab the shifter bezel and shifter I'll buy 'em off you. Assuming you don't need the same and can only find one. I can't find anything around here that fits the bill.

I already have the t-case.

I'm working on a manual shift idea to mount on my Elect transfer case that replaces the shift motor. It's using cables to push/pull similar to that used in motorcycles. When I get it working, I'll post pics. I have some parts made, but have been working on other projects as well, since my Electric shift motor works fine, right now.

Adsm, I might have an extra shifter in stock.

Matt. I have a 1350 shift motor that works if ya need it.

Cool.

I might have a shifter that will work, but I can't check until Saturday. No power in the garage and getting home after dark means I have 2 days a week I can do anything.

Check and see, if the one I have doesn't line up right I'll hit you up.

I will look around today. I hate these short days. Gettin behind on stuff myself
