Had a local garage "fix" my 4 wheel drive. They told my wife it was the little motor on the transfer case. It goes into 4 high but not 4 low. I wasn't here when they dropped it off last night and haven't had time to see or ask exactly what they did, too busy. Any ideas what it could be before I call them about it?

Head to the tech info section and look under transfer cases.... There is a very detailed troubleshooting guide there. Just off hand it sounds like if they replaced the motor there probably is a bad connection in the socket that gives the feedback to the control module. Dirty pin in the connector or something like that. would help if you would post the info on your vehicle like year etc.

Yes, year, model, engine, trans(auto/manual) would be helpful.

And yes the electric shift on a Ranger is a small electric motor that moves a transfer case selector, and it is a common failing of this model, you sometimes have to roll the vehicle forward to fully engage the transfer case, so select 4x4 LOW and move truck forward to see if light comes on.

Yup, sorry. 1994 4.0 Manual. God I hate pushing an electronic button and nothing happens (stupid air cond. quit working now too). Would much rather have a physical linkage! Gonna fix this and then look into doing a manual transfer case swap at some point. Putting $ into manual hubs, gears and lockers real soon, then lift and tires. Gotta work out these pissin' bugs first.

Neither did a PO in the Rat's past. It came to me with a rat's nest of wire where the shift motor was s'posed to be. I keep it 4w high with the hubs unlocked :D
