4x4 C5 pic request

All you need is the shifter and arm,no real reason to go into the case.
I bought the one in the pic for $20 from a member on TRS.

Wouldn't the longer lever on the t-case bottom out in the slot of the actual 4x4 lever going into 4lo though? Or is the slot deep enough it is a non-issue?

I think the T-Case arms are the same ,the shifter arm is the difference.
Like I said...I THINK....lol.

To be honest I didn't even look at mine, but in your pic comparing the two levers it looks like it is held on by something on the inside.

If I get one from a yard I would either have to get the whole case and hope it is good or take that lever off somehow.

The early cases (83/84/85) had the non removable (not held on with an external nut) arms. The majority of the 1985 A4LD trucks I've seen seem to have the removable arm. (looks like it in your pic.)

You need the shorter arm from an 86/87 FM145 truck's t-case. The t-case shift arm is longer on A4LD/FM146/M5OD trucks.

My tech pics are from mocking up a 1354M behind a C5 to replace the 1350 in my BII.

Thanks Totalled for the info.
My 85 had the TK 5 speed.

Somehow I managed to find the lever and gate out of a BII at U-Pull-It. I was up there doing that (1 hour away from home) so I missed all that about the FM145 having the right lever and was tugging on the C5's lever thinking it must just pop in there or something. If anybody is wondering it doesn't.

Making it shorter shouldn't be too tough as long as they are not clocked different, it didn't look like they were (4lo was still straight ahead)

So then the arm from either a FM145 or a TK5 will work?

Or does anybody have one handy to give me a center to center (pin and hole) dimention?

I went back, couldn't find a removable one.

The nonremovable one on the BII I scalped the lever out of was roughly 1-7/8" from center of pin to center of pivot.

EDIT: 1-7/8" is not exactly right, I am not thrilled with how it shifts at the moment.

I shortened it up, put it one, sounds like I get a good 4hi detent.

I need to trim the floor a little to get it to go into 4lo, and I can't test it until I get a front driveshaft in it.

So what did you end up doing here? I have the exact same problem with my linkage lol it's in hitting the dash not going into 2wheel:bawling::bawling:

Ok, now to recap and cram all of this into one post:

TK-4, FM145 and C5 use the shorter linkage assembly with a different lever into the cab, shift gate and t-case lever

The FM146, M5OD and A4LD use the longer linkage assembly with their own lever into the cab, shift gate and t-case lever.

To complicate things most 83-85 transfer cases had levers that were not removable. 85’s were kind of a mixed bag between removable and non removable but the transmissions that used the shorter one thinned out as time went on. Most ‘85 A4LD’s had the removable longer lever. 85-87 FM145’s had the removable shorter lever.

It would take some work to fabricate a longer lever to a shorter one. They are a really odd length and the rectangular hole is straight to the lever with the shorter ones and turned at an angle on the longer ones.

My A4LD lever:

Trying to mount the longer A4LD setup on C5 = epic fail...

Compared to the shorter gear lever set:

My longer t-case lever I tried to make fit by shortening and welding, note the hole orientation:

Here is the lever I pulled out of an '85 B2 with a 5-speed transmission last weekend, the rest of the linkage looked like what I got out of a C5. I didn't really look at the tranny to id it, I spotted the linkage and knew it had the lever I needed. The shorter detachable lever is something of a bugger to turn up.

There is a "AA" stamped on the back, dunno what that means or if it is unique to that lever.

This is one of the stupid little "getcha" things nobody thinks about when they set about swapping transmissions and transfer cases, thanks to Totalled, Copperhead and Capt Jay for helping me through this.

I had the same problem and yes it does hang up a project if you aren't prepared for it... luckily I had a spare T-case that had the correct arm on it and I was back on track :D
