4x4 actuator problem..

wasnt sure where to post this as i am new to the site but here it is..
have a 1990 4x4 ranger v6 automatic (a4ld) and it has been stuck in 4 wheel drive since i picked it up about three-four weeks ago. took it out wheelin yesterday and the buttons on the dash and cluster went out (used to flash 4x4 and low range) i had my hubs locked and then i pressed the 4x4 button and the light came on and 4x4 engaged. so i was like cool its working correctly and not stuck in 4x4 any more. went to go do some muddin today and locked my hubs and pressed the 4x4 button, nothing. no lights and 4x4 didnt engage.. confused on whats goin on here. anyone have any advice on what to check and/or replace? any advice would be awesome thanks.

Also if I remember correctly there is a 4x4 control module that sometimes gives out, which could be directly linked to why you don't get the lights on the dash at random times. However someone who is more familiar with the older style rangers will chime in.
