4WD wont engage after braking.

Tried doing a search, but couldn't find anything specific to my problem.

I have a 1996 ranger 4wd xlt. I seem to have a problem getting my 4wd to engage after I apply my brakes in snow and slide a bit. Is there some connection between the operation of the ABS brakes and the 4wd?
It seems that if I park the truck and restart it a little while later, the 4wd will then engage. This is quite aggravating because it has happened 3 times this winter when I needed the 4wd the most. Edited to add that it is an automatic.

Auto or manual hubs?

If auto could they be releasing when you brake and not reapplying when the axles start turning?

Same in forward and reverse?

Hi adsm08.

Doesn't seem to. I will get the flashing 4wd hi lo lights.
I took it to my garage and they could not find anything. I did have work done on the 4wd system in late 2011 because it wouldn't engage. Been fine since then until now. It still seems to be related to the abs somehow.
All three times it would not engage was right after applying the brakes on snow.

Hi Panama.

It's auto. It never happened while in 4wd. It was always after the abs kicked in
that it would not go into 4wd.
