I have an 88' Bronco II, I have realized I have a 4wd transfer case but it's 2wd. And I have a 2wd front end suspension.

What going on??

In the tech library on here I think it's mentioned in a few articles and if you do a search on dummy t-cases in the forums you'll find some info on it as well. I believe it was actually quite common.

Yeah, what he said. I don't know the particulars, but a lot of Bronco II's were equipped with a "dummy" transfer case. But if you look underneath, no driveshaft, and all the other goodies for 4WD. Looks like 4WD, but it's only 2WD.

It was done so they could use the same transmission and rear driveshaft on the 2wd and 4wd.

And before anyone asks:
"why not just use a 2wd trans and a different driveshaft?"

Consider what crash testing recertification costs.
