4wd quit working in my 2002 ford ranger edge

Hi I have a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 3.0 engine 4 door my 4wd was working great but now it will not work at all when you turn the nob the light doesn't come one and it doesn't engage there was no noise but the other day it sounded like something was on the drive shaft and hitting and when stopped to look there nothing and it stopped making the sound can someone please let me know what is going on with it and what to do? Thanks
