Hello,

I just replaced an engine in my 2000 Ford Ranger. Everything is fine except for the 4WD. I turn the knob on the dash to either 4WD High or Low. I hear a clicking noise, but the indicator lights are not coming on and the 4WD is not engaging. I've read so many threads on this topic that I'm not sure what to check first. Does anyone have a simple troubleshooting list of steps to follow?

Thanks in advance for the help.

sounds like the shifter motor on the transfer case. take the motor off and manual turn the gears (tells you which way to turn it on the t case itself) the motors tend to fail alot when snow or mud get up in there. the clicking noise sounds like your 4wd module is ok. also try driving it in 4wd and see if maybe its in 4wd but the lights burned out (probably not the case). also make sure you are stopped and in neutral to switch to 4 low
