I've been working through the 4WD diagnostics to figure out why my 4WD is not working on my '95 Ranger (no Hi or Lo). I followed the Chilton manual and pulled what I believe is the 4WD control module from behind the radio (the manual called it the GEM). It does not have the push button or LED is was expecting. It is labelled with part #F57B-14B205-EL, and says "Pick-Up Electronic 4x4" on it. Do I have the right part, or is it something else?

Yes, the GEM controls the 4x4 function.

PSSSST !!!! Check the shift motor.

Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that there is a separate module with a white push button that allows me to do a diagnostic check on it. I checked behind the driver's side rear jump seat, the passenger side kick panel, and behind the radio, and all I found was the GEM, which offers no diagnostics.

Also, I will certainly get to checking the shift motor, but wanted to do this (supposedly) easy test first.

I believe only the '94 & down controller has the diagnostic LED and button ('95up is done with a diagnostics scanner IIRC)
