4wd control module compatibility

I picked up a 2001 ranger 4wd and the lights for 4wd do not come on the dash when starting the truck so I removed the computer for 4wd (behind the kick panel contacts were rusty and one broke off so that module is junk...) bought a control module off a 2002 explorer plugged it in and the same thing no lights come on nothing engages..., are they interchangeable ? or did I buy the wrong part
what years are interchangeable as in what trucks/suvs can I grab the control module in and plug and play it ?
any help would be greatly appreciated

Shift module is the same for '01-'02 explorer and '01-'05 Ranger, so you have the right one.

If the old module got water in it, i.e. "rusty wires" then most likely some fuses are blown.
I think there are 3 fuses for the 4wd system.

Hi Ron, thanks for the reply, I went to the bone yard today and compared rangers and explorers the explorer ones are different (full size explorer) they also had fulltime 4wd so that may be it ? The explorer one when in my truck I could pop the truck in reverse (manual transmission) and the backup lights would light up with key off and out of truck it also allowed me to turn on my heat when the trucck was off and key out... bottom line is I took my old one to the yard and compared part #'s found one off an 02 ranger and now my 4x4 works only on hi low does not engage ... any thoughts ?
