i blew up the transmission in my 1984 Ford Ranger 4x4 and i use to have a 1987 2.9L with a 5 speed and i have noticed that the slave cylinders are different between the two.and i wondering if a 5 speed will bolt up into my 84' even though the slave cylinders are different. The 5 speed seems to have a long arm for the slave and the 4 speed bolts right into the tranny.help?

So you still have the '87 trans and you want to use it?
Off the top of my head, the major problem with the swap is going to be the length of the transmission. You'll end up having to replace both the front and rear driveshafts. I'm not sure about the trans crossmember - it may need to be replaced/relocated. You're right about the change to the slave cylinder design, it was later changed from an external slave to a concentric design. If nothing else, I'm sure you could just replace the line going from your master cylinder to a newer line and connect it to the concentric slave on the '87 trans.

For the same amount of work you could swap in a Mazda trans and it would be a more reliable unit.

No i dont have the 87 trans i was just using it for comparing reasons. Mazda transmission?Do you mean i could put a mazda 5 speed in my truck and it would bolt right up and would not need any "customization" or modification? Because i would really rather have a 5 speed than the 4 speed i have now. Also the junk yards around my area have all quoted me 300 dollars for this tranny when my 5 speed in my old 1987 was only 150 dollars, and i dont know whats so special about this 4 speed.:shok:

The only one that will bolt up directly is the four speed. All the rest are longer and require swapping driveshafts, moving transmission crossmembers, etc... However, given that the Mazda (behind all 4.0's and some 88+ 2.9's) is significantly more reliable and continues to be produced, it is worth considering.

i have a 2wd 4-speed that you could use if it will adapt to the t-case. its for sale in the for sale forum. good trans

......you never stated that part, I used to go fishing in the skagit valley, canadian end of skagit lake? you could just canoe across to the canadian side and pick up the trans and paddle back, eliminate the border lineup, lol, I'm about 30 mins northeast of the sumas border crossing. Trans is still in a truck, I will pull it if your serious, anything else you need? 1354 manual t-case's? Got lots of stuff--cheers
