I have a 01 ranger with the drivetrain out of a 96 Explorer 5.0. The truck runs & drives really well but it seems like it's slow to downshift. I was told the trans had a shift kit installed & it does seems like a j mod (I've had one before). Quick & firm shifts barks my 275/45s going into 2nd. When cruising in OD it seems to take a lot of throttle to get it to kickdown & seem long on top of that. I have a 00 Mountaineer with the same drivetrain & while it has very soft shifts it seems to downshift much quicker. Where should I be looking? I've read the explorer/truck valve bodies don't respond the same as the car valve bodies, but I've also read they do. Maybe I should pick up a mustang valve body & j mod it so I know exactly what I have & install some new solenoids while I'm in there? It is 100% drivable & really not that bad but it robs some of the sportiness of the truck in my opinion. Suggestions?

Subscribing to this - I've had similar observations on the same setup in my '99. At anything but very high throttle input it's very hesitant to downshift. If you give it enough accelerator input, it will suddenly downshift (and feels like it may have shifted down two gears). Suddenly you're screaming along at 4500 rpm and it's pulling like a freight train. A middle ground would be really nice.
