I picked up a 95 Ranger 4x4, 4.0, 4R55E, 3.73 limited.

Here’s the problem, it shifts hard, I mean HARD! If I stop and began to accelerate it will stay in first tell about 3K then grab second with a bang under light acceleration, under moderate acceleration it will bark the tires when grabbing second at about 3.5K RPM’s. It grabs all gears with a bang including OD.

The other day I left the truck idling it a friend’s house for about 15 minuets, when I left it would not shift into drive or OD. I stopped shut it off and waited for about a minuet then it shifted up through the gears ok (but hard) including OD. I had to make one stop on the way home, after that it would not shift into drive (or OD) at all, it would shift from first to second then when it was suppose to shift into drive it would fall back to first! Nothing I did made any difference.

I had to manually shift it into second and drive home at 35MPH in second gear.

The next day it shifted through the gears just fine, but like it has been doing for the past 3 week, it shifted hard, like it has a strip shift kit in it.

The above condition only happens when the truck is warm; on a cold start up the shifts a considerably softer. After about 5 miles it will begin to shift hared, after about 25 miles it will really bang gears!

Dos anyone have an idea about what is causing this?

I have read about the separator plate and gasket that fail in these transmissions, but I have engine braking in all gears including first.

Heres what I can tell you.

No check engine light.

Trans fluid is clean and cherry, no burnt smell.:icon_thumby:

I do have engine braking in first.

The transmission doesn’t slip, ever.

The TC locks up like normal, it doesn’t appear to unlock when shifting in or out of OD.

The OD off light doesn’t blink or flash.

I have no engine braking in OD, if I cancel the OD it has engine braking in drive, second and first.

The antilock brakes and cruse control work normally.

I have adjusted the bands to spec; it cured my mild 2-3 shift flare but made no other difference.

Do you think this might be the dreaded separator plat and gasket? Or maybe a shift solenoid on it’s way out?

Any help or thoughts would be a life saver.

Thank you for your time.

Your solenoid pack inside the transmission needs to be replaced. Also when you do the solenoid pack drop the valve body and replace the valve baod gasket.
