I got a call tonight from the Fiancee saying she had a dilema with her truck.

It appears as when she was backing out of her driveway the truck wouldn't move. It only goes into Reverse, when the indicators in Neutral, and only goes into Drive when the Indicators in 2.

IIRC there is a thumbwheel somewhere under the dash that adjusts this needle. But what causes it to jump out of place to begin with and so sudden at that.

I have not seen it since it happened, and I am hoping that's all it is, but she said it doesn't seem like it want's to go now, and when I asked if it slowed down real quick when the accelerator was release she said yes.... So I think it may not be in Drive, but actually going into 2ND.

What internally if anything would cause this to happen?

That little adjuster does break off from time to time, especially if it's an older truck and/or cold out side. Good news is that it has no bearing on the trans it's self.

So what do I need a new cable? What would I be looking for that was broken?

Yes. Usually the white plastic end that bolts on to the steering column. I have rigged broken ones together before. Just can't adjust it anymore.

She now noticed that when she put the truck into drive (which is now 2) the O/D OFF light comes on...

This does not sound good!

Does the O/D lamp flash or just turn on ?????

Supposibly just turned on... But when I went to look at and drive it, nothing ever happened. All I could see wrong was the needle was out of whack.

Everything else seemed fine.

Well I got it for a day to fix it and it was simple.

I took a couple pictures of the part and how I fixed it.

Took the panel under the steering wheel off and was able to get right to it.
