I have a bad 4R44E out of a 98 3.0 4x4.
Put a rebuilt valve body in, and worked great for about a week. New problem is slipping in forward, reverse is fine. Before the valve body, it just behaved erratically.
Debating on tearing down and replacing the clutches and other components that come with the rebuild kit.
Also debating getting a 2wd, tearing it down and swapping the tail shaft.
Junkyard shopping, it appears the 4R44E is different from the 98 to the 99-01.
But everything I've read is that the 4R44E is the same across the board as far as plug and play, with differences being upgraded internals in the later years, but electrically and functionally the same.
I would rather disassemble a known good unit and swap the tail shaft than rebuild mine. Never taken an auto apart before, And while I don't doubt my ability to do it mechanically, identifying and diagnosing the issue while it's apart is my hang-up. Don't want to tear it down and replace the parts only to wind up with the same issue 2 weeks later because I missed something.
Also wouldn't be opposed to a 4R55E from a 4.0 4x4. They seem to be much more available. Swap the bell housing and pump + Torque converter and roll out. But some information says the 55 is missing an internal sensor, and that it's not a compatible swap.
I've read through the automatic trans tech article on the site and while it is helpful, it doesn't address any of my specific questions at this point.
Would also buy a good used 4x4 4R55E, but there's nothing available within reasonable driving distance.
I'm in toledo.
