Hello all, my recently acquired '95 Ranger SXT is proving to need all kinds of work since I got it. I'm currently into the 4R44E to replace a number of things. Quick background:
I bought the truck from a guy who said he'd just put a junkyard transmission in. I ran it up and down a county highway, got it up to about 65 and felt it shift smoothly and I believe engage lockup so I bought it. After fixing a poor running condition, I gave it its first actual around-town drive and started experiencing all kinds of shift weirdness; 2-3 flares, jumping between gears without any change to load or throttle, what felt like a random low-speed OD engagement... as I backed into my parking spot at home I saw a huge streak of fluid from about 20 feet away. Sure enough, it was pumping trans fluid out of the bellhousing. With the trans out I pulled the TC and could see the pump pushed the front seal all the way out of the pump. Why? Well the PO had "repaired" a rotted cooler line with a short section of rubber line that had kinked like a garden hose. I'm assuming once the trans got up to temp and it started routing through the cooler the pump pressures skyrocketed (not to mention trans temps).
Anyway, I found all kinds of evidence of sloppy work including a piece of gravel in the trans pan... I want to give the valve body a good cleaning and am going to throw a Transgo kit in it. I also tested the solenoids and found all shift solenoids to have proper resistance. The EPC solenoid shows 3.4 ohms and the TCC solenoid shows 9 ohms. When I went to order an EPC solenoid I see that there is the green screen and red screen versions. My '95 has a green screen (guess the jy trans came from a similar year). I can't find a green screen EPC for sale anywhere. Does anyone have a line on one? Second question, is the TCC solenoid the same throughout the years?
Also, anything else I ought to look at while I have the trans down? I have to take the rear housing off because the parking pawl is either stuck or not engaging. I was not planning on going into the trans body itself unless I have to. I figure with new solenoids, a shift kit, a good cleaning and new filter, and an unblocked cooling path (with an external cooler) I should be operational.
Thank you!
