After doing tons of research on the Cummins 4bt and those engine swaps, I came to the conclusion I don't want to shoehorn that beast into my '99 Ranger.

I just discovered the Mitsubishi-powered Rangers from the 1980s.

Wouldn't a more modern version be an easy(easier) swap than some of the others that have been done? Some of the later versions are cranking out 286 ft lbs!

Sure, depending on your idea of "fun" and interest, you can swap in anything that will "fit".

This TDI build is a good read to see what the issues will be: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130443

Diesel with manual trans would be easiest, no transmission computer control to deal with
Most of the new smaller diesels are made for FWD so finding a RWD trans and conversion will be a challenge.
Although a FWD Ranger sound interesting :)

Thanks, RonD.

I've checked out the TDI thread before. It's what got me to settle on my gas 3.0 Flex.

Those Mitsubishi's look like they may be an easier fit. Time for more research.

I'm in the process of putting a 4D55 into my 1991 ranger. The 4D55 and 4D56 share the same block. You can also put a Hyundai DB4H in there its a copy of the 4D56. They fit in the engine bay very easily and bolt up to the Mitsubishi FM146 and FM145 as well as another transmission, can remember which one. There is a bell housing that can be used and they are about $100 new. I have the part number somewhere. It's rather easy to to the wiring as it only needs a handful of wires to run.

The modern version of the 4D56 produces around 180hp and 315lb.ft of torque. They are used in the JDM Mitsubishi Tritons. The downside is they are very computerized.

Regards,
Mike

Just curious where this thread ended. My 2.9 is pushing oil out the dipstick tube and if I need to do any major repairs, I’m probably going to do a diesel swap. I have a lead on a 4x2 Mitsubishi pickup with a recently rebuilt 4D56. If it will really bolt to my FM146, it seems like a good option. I can get the whole truck for less than the TDI adapter.

Go tdi…. It’s a better engine. And you can have something with real power. I have a Mercedes om617 diesel in my bronco II and I really couldn’t imagine something with less power in it’s place lol

ps this is a old thread and the people are probably long gone….
