454 swap

Anybody got any Idea on mileage out of a 454 in a suburban. I got 8-10 from a 460 in an F-250, got a solid 8.5 from the motorhome with a EFI460.

Looking for a 6.5L diesel with a bank turbo kit I came across a 454 ready to run, all accessories, manifolds, and throttle body/ computer....... complete and ready to start...... and it is a drop in plug and play swap into a Suburban..... tranny and motor mounts are the same as the 350


I can get it for $300 with 73,000 miles. it was swapped out for a 6.5L turbo, its out of a 90 3500 dually.

gear ratio? overdrive? you'll prolly be somewhere in the same range as above if direct drive and 4.10's.my buddy's got a 90 4x4 1 ton 454, t400, 4.10,33's and he doesn't drive faster than 55 most of the time because those big slugs suck a lot of fuel when they're over 2000 rpms.

i can't remember if 90 is a roller cam

oh yeah, currently has 3.42 and a 27% OD (or is it 24%), I will changing the axle out for a full float 14 bolt with 4.10. I guess it doesn't really matter on a dedicated tow rig does it?

My buddy's got an 87 F-350 with a 10:1 521 stroker (460 based) with standalone EFI. The truck has a ZF 5 speed manual, 4x4, 305/75/16's, 4.56 gears. He can get as much as 13-14 driving carefully with no trailer. With a 8000 lb trailer he gets about 10-11. With a 25,000 lb trailer (yes it'll actually tow that much) he gets about 7.

And as was said before, just lookout for RPMs with a big displacement engine. If he gets that thing over about 1750 RPM's you can watch the gas gauge move. He usually drives around in the 700-1100 range. It'll break all 4 tires loose in 4th at 1200 RPM!

The Cruiser gets 10 mpg with its rice grinding Jeep clone.

I need the 'Burban to haul the Cruiser. I don't think the 350 with 207,XXX miles is not up to the task of pulling 6000 pounds of Cruiser, 2000 pounds of trailer, and 2000 pounds of off road gear.

I was thinking the 'Burban's 350 into the Cruiser or maybe a 4BT.

I would bet you get somewhere around 10-12. My buddy had an early 90's K3500 with a 454 that got around that. I'm not sure what he got towing. I get 5-7 in my 12,000lb camper that's got a 440, so I'm sure you'd do better than that.

Why not find a 6.2 diesel out of an older Chevy pickup and swap that in place of the 350 you have now? They're good motors and pretty easy to find...if you found another suburban with that stuff in it just swap it all over.

you should be able to manage 12-13 empty is your easy on it probally about 8-9 towing. My 79 f250 460, 4spd, 4.10s, 38s was getting about 10 empty and 7ish towing. but if ran it hard i got 4 empty and i think it was in the gallons per mile range on a very hard pull.

1. I can get the 454 full dressed and ready to run for $300. 6.2L diesels around here cost more than a 4bt, although I do know of one that has a thrown rod I can get for $300

2. the 454 is a drop in swap, all I have to change is the ECM, TBI, and exhaust manifold. the engine comes with all of that. 6.2L would require time I don't have.

as long as I can be around 8 - 10 towing then i will be ok with it. The 350 got around 10 towing. although somebody at chevytalk.org told me that the 350 would indeed would be up to the task, my rated towing capacity is 9900 pounds, 300 pounds won't make any difference to it, but the 454 would be better.

now that sounds like a plan.probably better mileage with the 350 and i hear they are lighter(doesn't make sense to me but a smallblock can't be too much heavier)? my grandpa could smoke all four tires with a 327 in his landcruiser!

with the big blocks torque you should try the 3.42 gears first.probably about 2300 at 65 in overdrive.unless thats a 700r4 its getting hooked to in which case i'de give it all the leverage help it can get

I am guessing 17mpg with the 350 in the cruiser with a gear splitter, that seems to be average with a 350TBI series 60 with a 700r4 and 3.73. I will be going with a ranger torque splitter that has a 27% OD and 4.10s. the 350 gets 14 in the Suburban normal driving, 19 on a long road trip with the cruise set at 65.

it will be hooking to the 4L80e. Planning on pulling alot of grades so I think 3.73s. it has 3.42 right now and I don't like em, RPMs to low at 55. but yeah they will get tried first because they are already in it.

you can a ready to run 454 for $300 and you have to ask if you should buy it? I can't get one around here for less than 1200 and they usually need an overhaul.

my buddy has on in his 1500 with 8 inches of lift 5 speed 4.88s and 35s. its also sas and he would get around 8-10 and lucky to get 12 on the highway
