400 into ranger: need help

yea this is the cam im lookin at. said its the perfect cam for a truck. also looking at the edelbrock performer dual plane intake with a 650 edelbrock also. the headers im planning on runnin cut outs right behind the headers with te electric motor valve but on the regular exhuast have a 18 inch glass pack with around 3 to 4 feet of 3 inch pipe behind it and dumpin underneath the bed. open the cutouts should sound like thunder huh?and also thinkin of putting flame thrower kits on the cut outs. oil pump already in it runs at idle at 50 pounds then when gouge on it hits up to 75 i think or 65 not sure. so all i shound need is just a nice set of pistons to go with this setup huh? hows it sounding for a ranger truck?

Dunno about the flamethrower deal on a truck with dumped exhaust, could be exciting with your fuel tank under the bed too.

I think my dad has about 2.5" duals on his 400, with two glasspacks dumped under the bed. It sounds ok, I think it would sound better if the sound didn't have to get distorted echoing around under the truck before you hear it though. It did have a really mean grumble when it finally blew out its first set of glasspacks and pretty much had straightpipes awhile ago, then came tractor pulling time and we had to put new ones on it to make it tolarable pulling a trailer.

u can get and actually have them work with little issue a set of over the frame headers for a 78 f-150 with a non catalyst 400m, i actually have done the swap u are doing now in multiple incantations as we do alot of motor swaps in our shop. any over the frame headers for a fullsize ford with that motor will be adapted to work with very littl modifications

I looked in Comp's catalog and it suggests not using the stock valvetrain components, I'd assume that also includes the stock rocker arms and pedestal fulcrums. Better check with them to make sure first. Might be better off with the 268H which does work with the stock compression and valvetrain. The Summit #5200 I used did as well.

Speakin of 400ms, andybody seen the newest hotrod mag? They built one hell of a bastard 400. I've never seen this much power out of a 400m<504hp. I now alot of guys build 351c into clevors but far as 400s go this is the most hp I've seen!!:icon_cheers:

man o man, i just ran over a jewel today. feller where i work use to own his own shop and all and he can do anythin to a motor that you can dream of. plus the exhaust. told me for the exhaust he'll make me a short shoppin list and me buy it and all and he'll install it all do all the welding and everythin with no labor charge as long as i tell people who did my exhaust. plus, said he could make me a intake for it if wanted to. help with the grinding the humps in the exhaust ports, everythin. he also said he'll make me the exhaust cut outs and to where theyll fit under the truck right and have a flare to em under the truck but not burn the bottom of the truck up if i put flame throwers on em. jsut couldnt help it, had to tell yall.

Hey yall, got a question for ya. How does :D8 stack fuel injection sound ontop of that motor instead of a carb? That feller that is doing all that extra work for me said he could build me a intake that has 8 throttle bodies on it, one for each piston. hows that sound? Also said if really want to make it scream, orta just move the engine behind the bed with a doghouse built around it to cover it cause all you need here in Mississippi to be street legal is seat belt, turn signals, head lights, windshield, windshield wipers and pass visual inspection, which can get a sticker here for 15 bucks, dont matter if ya runnin open headers. Then just have a direct drive to the axle, said could get me a heights, guess how you spell it, independent rear axle to help out with the traction and control and have a 4 link suspension to help out more with the traction. Then just let the torque convertor do what it suppose to do so be able to drive around in town but if hammer on it, be able to ride a wheely for some and ever more smoke it down the highway.

:icon_rofl:How well do you know this guy? Sounds to me like he's pullin your leg (if not yankin it real hard):icon_rofl: The Mississippi B'Squash seems to get deeper with him.:sexe:

i know him half way decent but thought the same thing myself but i called around asking about him and everyone around here and half way to tennessee all confirmed his story. said theyve seem him do some crazy stuff to a motor. called the top ford man around this area and said i was talkin to a him and he immediately said trust him, might sound crazy but believe it. ive had him work on my engines personally and i dont know how he does it but he can even outdo me on a motor, specially with the fuel injection systems.

a 8stack has been done before, just hope he spends a good week on tuning the motor to run properly, they are notoriusly bitchy to get tuned right and u will need a setup that will burn ALOT of fuel. look to get about 3-4 mpg with a setup of that nature

yea, he said it would take a good week or so to get it functioning properly. told me bout the sucky gas mileage but said hell put parameters on it to where unless go over 50% throttle, it wont burn as bad, maybe 10 miles to a gallon then. yea, i definely dont plan it to be my daily driver but just somethin to horse round in on the weekends, pull up sides some boys that think they bad, specially stangs and rice burners and just ever more eat their lunch.

i have actually seen a tripple throttle body setup on a ranger before, was a pretty awesome thing on a 2.9, but for work like that a tig is a must

tig? mean tig welder?:icon_welder: actually chatted with him just a hour or so ago and said he could could get possible 20 somethin miles per gallon with the 8 stack. gonna run a reg carb until get the intake and parts to make it with then when get it all together get started on it and get it mounted on the 400. also talkin bout getting hold of some turbos for it and maybe just maybe, on those big races, like one with my bud with the gto, get some nitro runnin a dry block and all. yes, he can get hold of it. :icon_hornsup:

on the nitro part, I was actually able to get him to tell me how he gets it and when he told me, its so simple its not even funny. Anyone can get it if they thought bout it and researched what is used for. Costs 25 bucks a gallon sure but still

Hey yall, just tested out the compression yesterday on the motor and got 150 psi per cylinder. Hows that sound for a 400m and do yall think should go with the heads on it or try to get some more?
