So, I bought a 1995 Ranger 4.0 5 speed 4x4 a few days ago. The headlights did not work so I replaced the switch and they now work. The speedometer did not work. The wiring going to the VSS on the transfer case was broken. I fixed the wiring and I have a speedometer now. The ABS and Air Bag lights are on. I have been working on getting the 4 wheel drive working. I have replaced the 4x4 selector switch in the dash. I have run thru the diagnostics to trouble shoot the 4x4 system. My MIL is flashing 5 times(front and rear abs speed sensors). My main question is... Would the abs speed sensors being bad cause my 4wheel drive not to work?? If so is there any way to bypass them? I don't want to spend that much money on the abs sensors if it is not going to fix my 4 wheel drive.

Nope. Totally unrelated issues. ABS won't affect 4x4 operation, nor vice versa. You got rear-only ABS, or is yours ABS on all 4 wheels?

What's the symptom for your failing 4wd? Do you have manual or auto front wheel hubs? Are they engaged/locked? Do they spin the front wheels when you turn the front driveshaft by hand? Have you inspected the little shift motor on the transfer case? Does that little motor actually shift, and you can hear it clunk when it shifts? Loss of 4wd is commonly caused by hubs or shift motor.

4 wheel ABS. I'm not worried about the abs light just the 4 wheel drive. I have manual hubs, locked or unlocked I get nothing. I have not been able to jack the truck up and see it the front wheels spin when front drive shaft is turned by hand. I have also not had the time to remove the shift motor to inspect it. When I turn my switch to engage 4 wheel drive I usually get nothing but every once in a while I can hear the relays clicking in the dash. The 4hi or 4 low lights never illuminate when moving the switch only when starting the truck and when it blink for the ABS code. Is there a way to hotwire/ jump the shift motor to engage the 4x4? If so I could just run my own switch and bypass the whole system that is causing me so much problems.

I got it working. The shift motor was not working, don't know if its in the wiring or the motor, don't care. When I removed the shift motor I saw the pretty little stamps that say 2H, 4H, and 4L. I grabbed my pliers and turned the shaft to 4H works like a dream. Turned to 4L works there also. So for me it is fixed. I will roll under the passenger side of the truck and manually shift it in and out of 4 wheel drive as needed. I don't wanna buy a new shift motor and it and up being the wiring. So now I have a 95 Ranger with a manual transfer case! Lol

With the shift motor it loses its place cause a rubber bumper gets wore and it if lightly tap it with a wrench ect it will work mine does it on occasion

Did you see the article in the tech section, showing how to clean the electrical contacts inside the shift motor? Didn't cost anything to fix mine. Works like a champ.
