I would like to know if anyone has had this problem and could direct me where to start looking. I have a 99 and when I try to engage my 4 wheel drive the light comes on but nothing engages. I don't here any noises or anything else. could it possiably be the motor in the transfer case has gone bad? If anyone has any ideas please advise. Thanks.

I had to replace one of those motors on the tranfer case once. It was fairly easy to do and as I recall wasn't very expensive either.

yeah, its probably the shift motor fomr what i har. i think you can take it off and clean it out really well and properly regrease it. then you should be set. check out this link

Do you think the 4-wheel drive isn't working because you don't hear it engage, or because it doesn't actually work?

When you're in 4HI, what happens when you go to neutral and put it in 4LO?

Check our Transfer Case forum. There are several topics and some stuck posts with plenty of information.

As the pages Mr Oaks advised you of will flesh out, there are many things that can go wrong with four wheel drive operation in 98-mid 00 rangers.....

I would break things into two areas; whether the system shifts the transfer case into 4WD, and whether or not the extremely dodgy vacuum actuated front hubs work.

In a nutshell, Ford was gagging to have electronic shift on the fly in their trucks....which requires entirely too much gadgets to make happen. Personally, I'd rather just lock the hubs and shift the transfer case myself.

i believe the dash lights will only come on if the transfer case shifts...in which case the probable cause would be the hubs.

4 Wheel Drive will not engage

I just had both hubs replaced by ford last summer because the bearings were growling. Can locking hubs be installed on these types on hubs or am I stuck with the vacuum ones?

The light indicates that it is engaged but the wheels do not turn. I had both hubs replaced last summer by ford because the bearings were growling. Is it possiable to install manual locks on these vacuum hubs or am I stuck. if so I guess I need to do a vacuum test on the hubs.

a company called AVM makes a manual hub kit for your truck...but i would confirm its the issue first.
