I have removed my doner 4.0L and it is on an engine stand. I am in the process of cleaning it up and painting. There is a major an oil leak from the valve covers mainly on the right side so I will replace these gaskets. I was considering removing the oil pan and replacing that gasket. However, I noticed in the shop manual that you also need to replace the front and rear oil seals and use sealent on some of the mating surfaces. How difficult is this operation? I do not think there is any oil coming from the pan areas. Engine has 60,000 miles, at least that is what the odometer shows.

The oil pan gasket on a 4.0 does not affect EITHER crankshaft seal.

What you DO need to have to re-install the oil pan is a straightedge.

the back of the pan MUST be flush with the back of the block

Failing to do this will either cause a leak when you tighten all
the bellhousing bolts or in an extreme case crack the oil pan.

I did notice the need for a straight edge to make sure the pan is in line with the block. I suspect that the shop manual states to change the rear seal because once you get the pan off it is best to change the seals.
