4 Low not engaging. Please help. Replaced sensor no joy

I DID use the search function, but could not find what I needed. Almost but not quite.

I have a 4.0 V6 1992 automatic STX. The pushbutton for 4WD works fine, and I know the 4WD works, but it will not enter 4 Low. Not even in Park or Neutral with the brake on. The starter overide switch works, it will not start in gear, and the brake light switch works also.

Today I will crawl under and check the resistance of the blue and green wires from the low speed sensor and look for 250-450 ohms but my questions are:

What is that switch called and/or the part number so I can order the right thing?

Is it hard to replace, or just a quick job?

If the switch checks out, what else could it be and what would be my next step?

Thanks in advance, gents!

Bill.

the part number is E6TZ7F293A or a Motive part # 1350640003. you are better off going to a junk yard. dealership here in bama wanted 250 bucks for one. iirc they call it a magnetic coil switch. it is easy to replace you can either cut the wires and splice them back or try your luck at getting the pins out of the plug it can be done but also can be a pain. after you get the wires loose you need a 10mm socket remove the bottom 2 bolts on your motor and the clip that hold the sensor in should come off then all you have to do is pry it out.

$100 new at the Ford dealer. I went with them to get 'er done. Will pick it up tomorrow and report back.

The switch read about 150 ohms so I assume that's the problem. Will pick up new switch tomorrow from the dealer.

Here's where I'm at now.

Replaced the sensor and it still does not work. No 4 Low light or any sound. In neutral with foot on the brake. Will not start in gear so I assume neutral swith is OK.

Where do I go from here? Bring it in? I can live without 4 Low but I'd rather fix it in case I wind up needing it someday.

Thanks. I don't want to waste any more money than I have to.

how did you out in the switch splice it in or was you able to pull the pins out of the plug? if it is spliced mack sure you got a good connection. also take a look at this link it will help you troubleshoot the system.. http://www.therangerstation.com/tec...ng_1994_&_Older_Electric_Shift_Transfer_Cases. if you can figure it out then i might take it in but that is up to you i dont like paying the high dollar amount they want. i guess i am cheap though. did you go to 4 high then to 4 low or was you just tring to go to 4 low.

It's spliced with crimped on connectors. The ohms check out at 250 so I think that's good.

I'll leave it alone and maybe bring it in when I get time/money to spare on it.

My 4x4 wouldnt even make a noise or even light the button on the dash...Sounds like a bad conection in the transfercase motor position cam. I took my motor off the case and took the cap off of the housing and cleaned and rebent the little arms inside there so they made good contact. Works fine ever since.
