well i picked up a nice 92 2wd explorer for a donor . it has the 4.0 wth a 5spd with 80k, new clutch runs GREAT had a blown coil bucket. i also picked up a 96 lower intake, fuelrail, injectors upper intake engine harness, manifolds and a 4.0 AUTO computer. my intention is to do a 4 liter swap in my 96 splash ranger that currently has the 2.3. iam obviously using the 93 4 liter heads, and block an using the stuff from the 96 from the lower intake up. i know the computer isnt right for this application but for now i should be able to use it an get the vehicle going an just have a check engine light for the tranny.
what problems might i have by using the 92 block and heads an the other 96 parts?
is the clutch master cylinder, slave going to need to be changed from the old 2.3 to the 4 liter? an what about the catylatic converter? i had to replace the one on the 2.3 an installed a universal one from auto zone. i SHOULD be able to use this correct? or will i have to use the stock one from the 92?

also GEARS.. it has 3.73s now am i going to have to re gear to a numerically lower ratio?

There is going to be alot of differences between the 92 and 96.

Wiring, PCM Calibration, heads, etc.

You'll want to get a MT computer, as the fuel injector strategy is different and will gain you 1-2 mpg over the AT computer when used with a MT.

Wiring is quite a bit different OBD-I vs. OBD-II

The heads are also different between the early 4.0 and the later. If you were to try and run the 92 block off the 96 PCM, you'd notice lack of power.

Truthfully you are better off getting a 95-97 engine wiring harness & engine compartment wiring harness, a MT computer from a 95-97, y-pipe, and a 4.0 block and heads(since you hae the rest of the intake, etc) from within the same years. This will make the swap simple and literally a bolt/snap in.

BTW, I do have a complete 4.0 engine compartment wiring harness out of a 96 for cheap($85 shipped to your door). Labeled and everything. PM me if interested.

ok well.. the 96 is obdII.. i have a obdII engine harness.. the only parts from the 92 that are being used are the tranny 5spd an the block and heads. everything else will be from a 96 and up. the engine harness should plug into the bay harness . for right now iam only going to use the auto computer to get it going until i can get a manual computer..

Are you sure about that? Even the engine compartment harnesses can differ between a 2.3 and 4.0 engine. I know they do on my 93 Ranger. Lots of little differences.
