I have a 97 ranger xl 4x4 4.0l manual trans. I bought a 4" tuff country lift for it. The kit doesnt come with front springs or any shocks. I wondering if I can buy 6" springs and shocks instead for a little more lift?. What brand of springs and shocks should i get?not too expensive, I was thinking skyjacker- are they good???. Also what would i have to do to the rear to make it level if I get the 6" coils.
I've read that with just the 4" lift alot of people are already having problems with rear being too low. My rear doesnt appear to be sagging right now so i hope i can just add a 2" spacer or belltech shakles but not both. the kit comes with add a leafs only.

Has anybody else done the 6" spring conversion to a 4" lift and what were your experienses with it?

Thanks guys. this site is amazing:icon_thumby:

yes you can use the 6" spring with the 4" brackets.....with the heavier 4.0 you prolly won't see a full 6" of lift anyways....

as for the rear, you can also try the 4 door Explorer springs....then if not level you can fine tune with the Chevy shackles.....

Go with Skyjacker 6" lift springs, they are by far the best: they won't sag very much and ride respectably. Any other brand will chatter your teeth and rupture your kidneys. Believe me the extra money they might cost is well worth it whether you want the flex or the more comfortable ride on the highway.

You will end up with about 4" of true lift anyway with the Skyjacker coils, since they run a little soft and you have the 4.0L.

6" of true lift can only be acheived with the 8" coils on a supercab 4.0L, and then you need 6" drop brackets....

I had a Tuff country kit, and the rear will sit lower than the front. To make it level use the AAl that comes with the kit, and Beltech shackles. I myself like the raked look, so I ditched the AAL and ran a 2" block on top of the stock block and beltech shackes (overall around 4.5" of net lift from stock).

You may have to do the same, everyone's experiences will vary, there are too many variables to accurately make an exact judgement.

The rear axle is way easier to modify lift-wise versus the front axle (and even that is really simple too), so if it ends up not tall enough, add some leafs from an explorer or another small block (please do not stack a block bigger that 1.5" on top of the stock block)...stacked blocks are taboo, but a small one is justifiable if its 1.5" or less.

You may have to use a combination of Beltechs, the AAL, explorer springs, or a small block. Start with the Beltechs and the AAl, and go from there.

Go ahead and order shocks for a 6" kit, they will work perfect, and give you a little wiggle room in case you change things later.
