4 cyl to 6 cyl bellhousing interchange?

I have an 87 2.9 2wd 5 speed transmission. Its whining really bad so im looking for a cheap replacement. Do the 4 cylinder and v6 transmissions interchange? I can get a 4 cylinder 5 speed 2wd for really cheap so i was wondering if i could put the bell housing from my truck onto that transmission. The 4 cylinder truck is a 86.

my guess is they will fit...based on what im reading in there. Looks like you have the toyo code 5 tranny which seems to bolt up to your year regardless of engine size.

85-87 Bellhousings are freely interchangeable on the transmissions so if you already have the correct bell it'll bolt right on.

The '85-87's are most easily identifiable by their "Top connect" slave cylinder
it's about 11 O'Clock viewed from the rear

IF the slave port sticks out the side, at 9 O'clock you a 1988-up transmission and you have a problem

Alright whell it turns out that the junkyard that i called has a 2.9 transmission that i need so im alright.

i think it should be mentioned in the tech liblary that the 4 cylinder transmission fit the 6 cylinders with a bellhousing swap though.
