Ok guys. So I've seen it said multiple times that a 4 banger 4x4 is rare. What I want to know is how rare are they? I have an 83 2.3 4 cylinder 4x4 with a 4" suspension lift and 2" body lift (soon to be 6" suspension). I've never though of my truck as rare so I'm looking for people that know more than me about it. I know mechanics to the point where I can over haul my engine and tranny but don't know much on the history of this truck. Btw the truck is clean title and I'm the second owner if that makes a difference. So if someone can shed some light on why it's rare I would appreciate it.

It was much more common in the 80s. Of course in the 80s you could still walk into a dealership and option out a vehicle exactly what you wanted, within reason of course (no factory V8 Ranger option).

Yes. Sadly no V8 option. I guess that just makes it that much more fun to do the swaps ourselves. I wish optioning a new vehicle was still like that. Nowadays, its mainly just "trim packages" that decide what you can and cannot get with certain add-on parts from the dealer.

I have a 94 2.3 4x4. I have seen one 95 2.3L 4x4 for sale, but haven't noticed a lot of them. Most people ask if I have the 4.0L and are shocked when I say its a 4 banger.

Yes, regular cab 4cyl. 4x4s were not common but available, I think until '97 when the 3.0l became the smallest engine in a 4x4.

I don't think they ever offered a 4cyl extra cab 4x4, if so they would be very rare.

4.0l regular cab short box 4x4 is another rare ranger

4.0L regular cab short bed 2wd is almost as rare as the 2.3L 4x4 with Auto Transmission.

Ive been after a 1995-1997 2.3L 4x4 automatic for around three years now. Also been after a 1995-1997 4.0L 2wd single cab short bed automatic for the same amount of time and nothing within 100 miles everytime I look. Maybe 1 or 2 way outside my search range.
