4:88 or 5:13 's D44/8.8

What do you guys recommend for a trail only rig?

I do mostly trails that have quite a bit of mud, logs, creeks, hills, and some rocks?

Right now I'm running 3:73's, stock 2.9, auto, and 36's.

I was thinking 5:13's but I'm worried they won't have good wheel speed for mud.

Assuming A4LD 4-speed auto, in 4high
Current
3.73, 36" tires, trans in OD(4th, .75) at 65mph would be at 1,700RPM, in 3rd 2,200RPM

4.88, 36" tires, trans in OD(4th, .75) at 65mph would be at 2,200RPM, in 3rd 2,900RPM

5.13, 36" tires, trans in OD(4th, .75) at 65mph would be at 2,300RPM, in 3rd 3,100RPM

Difference is not that much, 4.88/5.13

Highest torque for stock 2.9l is reported as 170ft/lb @ 2600rpm.

5.13 is looking pretty good, although the 4.88 is almost the same and might be better if you ever needed to put on a set of 33"

5.13s I love mine. I should have gone lower. I am on 35s with a 44 and an 8.8. It could be lower in the rocks and pulls great on the hwy.

I don't do mud unless I am forced to. It does great in the snow. I was hunting all week in knee deep snow and 4 chains. Sometimes 4 low first gear sometimes second.

I have 4.88s and love them but would like 5.13s more in the dirt I drive my truck on the highway a lot though

Yes the 4:88's and 35's in the Explorer will put it back to almost stock. I run this set up on mine, other than needing a engine rebuild (230k+ on the ticker), mine runs great down the hwy, and does well in the rocks. I do wish at times I would have went with the 5:13's just for the rocks (I still run the A4ld in mine). Everyone was sold out of that ratio when I did the gears in mine though, and I have been happy with the 4:88's. If I ever get the d44 and 9" set up for my Ranger I will go with 5:38's, but it doesnt see much hwy use (trailer it to the trails and just drive around town some)

There are a couple rocks here and there. Lol
But also the good possiblity of pulling a trailer on and offroad on occasion why after reading this was considering 513s.
