So I'm pondering slapping 35's on my truck. Might have someone interested in my 33's.

Anyways, want your folks thoughts on which gears to go with if/when I Jump to 35's. I'll give as much info I think is relevant.

4.0 sohc
Auto trans
Currently 33's and 4.10's
8.8 31 spline torsen rear
D35 ifs

Travels are mostly highway. 140 mile round trip commute. Daily.

Currently getting 15 mpg average. (Winter, I get 17 ish summer)

I want to stay as close to that as possible. Keeping in mind I'm mostly highway, personally I think 4.56 would be a better choice, right?

Cruisin the highway all the time, yea probably.
 
Id stay with the 4:10 to be honest. My 4.0 (OHV little less power) with the same 5spd automatic transmission you have, 4:56s, and 33" tires gets 15 winter and 18-20 summer. My commute is mainly highway as well.

My other 4.0 with 5sp automatic that had 3:73 gears and 33" tires got 20-22mpg on the same commute. Swapped that truck over to 4:56 for my 35" boggers and right now am getting 15mpg with the 33" tires still on.

If I didn't need the gears for hauling and off road climbing with a load the truck with 33s that a drive everyday would be getting the 3:73s I removed from the other truck. Id imaging 3:73s and 33" would return about the same as 4:10 and 35" for road use and mpg.
 
I do go offroad as well though. I cant imagine 4.10 and 35's being good at all lol. Even 4.10 with my 33's isn't ideal in my books.

My Cherokee im building has 4:10s and 35x12.50 KM2s. To be honest I don't feel much a difference between the 4:10s and my Ranger with the 4:56s and 35x10.50 Boggers.

I don't take either on the road in that form so cant give you mpg specs, but from an off road standpoint the heep 4.0L has a weaker low end torque build compared to the Ranger 4.0L and its more than adequate off road with the 4:10s. Throw some 35" tires on yours and drive it for a few weeks. You may like it that way especially with that large a commute on the highway. You can always use 4 low off road if 4 high cant climb. The SOHC 4.0L should be able to make good use of 4:10s.

Id stick with 4.10 and throw in a doubler...but that's just me.lol

I wouldn't say "a little less power", his SOHC has 32% more horsepower, unless yours is a 95-newer. in that case it has 28% more power

Do you realize 140 miles at 15mpg is a tad over 9 gallons of gas? That's like $30 a day, $150 a week, and $600 a month. I'd seriously consider a car instead...

And I thought driving my 10mpg F350 to work 10 miles was bad lol

I've been doing it for 2 years. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I realize how much it costs me lol.

And its more like $40-$45 a day. Gas is a lot more expensive in canada. In 2 years I've spent $14,500 on gas alone.

I am indeed going to get a cheap car for summer commuting eventually. A car just isn't practical in winter so half the year I have to drive the truck anyways. And after the initial price of a car, yearly insurance, maintenance etc. A car wouldn't save me much anyways.

I did the math when I was commuting 50 miles round trip a day...If I bought a $1500 car that got 30 mpg, it would start saving me money within a year. That includes the cost of the car, insurance, and upkeep. Not to mention, I wouldn't be buying a set of 35-37" tires once a year or racking up miles on the old turd.

So I bought a $500 dollar car that got 35 mpg and it was a blast to beat on.

Yeah see the distance I drive I need something reliable and lower mileage so it lasts. I'm looking at 2500-3000. Insurance up here for a car in that range would be around 1000. If it got 30 mpg it would cost half of what I spend now. For half the year.

So, 2500 car, 1000 insurance, 1800 in gas. Total of 5300.
Plus oil changes, maintenance items, etc etc. It would take about 1.5 years to break even, then sure after that it would start saving me money. But by that time im hoping to have a job closer to home.


But this thread isn't about whether I should get a car or not lol.

I have 4.10s and 35's. Def needs that little extra gear off the line. I'm going 4.56 with my sas because I do plan on driving on the highway sometimes. But it's okay. I didn't notice a drop from the 33's to 35's other than rpm on the highway
