hello new owner to a 2002 ford ranger 4.0 edge
got it at good price due to the 4X4 not working
tried flicking the switch on the dash while my bro hit the transfer case moter to see if it was stuck .
but no luck.
when i flick the switch on dash console i get no indicater lights for 4X4 at all .
so i gues what i need help with is the steps of prosses of elimination of things to try.
i dont mind working on the vehicle my self plus it is alot cheeper that way.

The first and most obvious thing to check is the fuses. It will tell you in the owners manual which ones to be looking for. There should be a relay under the hood also.

swap in a manual 1354 or a 1350 and cut down the drive shaft...but ya like said on your last post it may be a fuse

Check the fuses for sure. Then check there is a relay for the shift motor. They are usually in the B-pillar somewhere. From there check with a multimeter that when in 4x4 you are actually getting power to the shift motor. Try to rule everything out before replacing the shift motor.

If it has an electronic transfer case, often the electric motors go out. You can remove to connector at the transfer case, check for 12V while someone else moves the switch. If you have power there, remove the motor and manually put it into 4wd with a screwdriver. If you are able to do that, the T-case is functioning properly so replace the motor. If you don't have 12V at the motor, check the fuse, relay, switch, etc.

Great thanx for the quick replies and starting points :)

4*4 = 16. what doesn't work about that?

4X4 not working

ok checked all the fuses they all were ok .. before i check transfere case motor if this motor is not working would the 4X4 dash indicater lights still not come on ?

If it doesn't shift into 4wheel the light will not come on.

When you first start the truck both the 4x4 and 4x4LOW indicator lights will momentarily light up. This is to make sure they are still functioning. Next time you start the truck, look for them. They are on the far right side of the instrument cluster.

I think it better you try and diagnose and repair the problem then swap in a new transfer case as mentioned.
