My credo
If you ain't first you're last
I'm going to be replacing all my components up front, cv axles, lower ball joints, lower control arm bushings, hub assemblies the whole 9 and I was wondering how the d35 ifs would hold up to a spool style locker, 4.10s (upgrading from the 3.73s) and 33x10.5 km2s. I got a 4.0 ohv, I wanna retain some gas mileage since it's my DD but I realize it'll go downhill of course. I'm gonna be running timken hubs, and moog ball joints.

Also I was going to do get some torsion keys and get it up 2.5" possibly since I'll be taking the bars out anyways to get the control arms out.

Don't spool the front unless you plan on hydro assist front. Just go with a lunch box locker.

And I was mistaken on the style locker I want.. I just want a mechanical locker I found the powertrax 92-0435-2702, for $450, is this a good locker?

yes. the no-slip is great.

I hear anything more than an open front diff with oversize tires on the 99 D35 IFS will pop CV joints and blow up pretty fast. I've got 33's and 4.10's on my 99 super-cab and if it were locked i'm pretty sure it'd blow up cornering on pavement. Get an Expo 8.8 rear and do the swap. I did, and it made a world of difference from open to posi, no need to mess with the front.

i was going to get the locker that would unlock while youre turning though, would it still blow up the CVs? i don't want a spool.. i realized those things make it chatter, and yeah im definitely getting a expo axle for the back and locking it.

IMO.. LS rear is worthless offroad.

You will probably want manual lock out hubs too.

Yeah I got the rugged ridge ones.. I wish they made one of metal that plastic stuff just sketches me out.. But they work good so I have no complaints, and I was thinking of doing the lockrite in the back once I get the expo axle. Is 4.10 a good ratio with 33s? Or will my 3.73s cut it with the 4.0?

And I should just leave the front open? What kind of CV axles should I get? I wanted to get the precision from Oreilly since it's federal mogul.

I would say 4.56.

you can get away with any style auto locker in the front. When the transfer case is not engaged there is no power to the front end. Turning with the auto locker will be the same as an open or limited slip because of the design allowing different wheel speeds when no load is applied.

The minute you engage the transfer case and are in 4wd be prepared for a hard time turning and binding anytime you apply throttle in a corner. If used strictly offroad in slippery situations so the bind can unload you may be able to make the CVs last. Tackle rocks and hardpack terrain in 4wd and those CVs will be toast very quickly.

A spool will cause you issues in any drive mode 2wd or 4wd.

4.10s should be plenty fine with 33x10.50 and the 4.0ohv. I had that combo with 3.73 gears and actually enjoyed its drivability and mpg on road and still plenty capable 4-hi and 4-low off road. I have 33x10.50 and the 4.0ohv now with 4.56 gears. awesome off road but a mpg and drivability killer on road.

Yeah I think then I'll just leave the rear locked, and I wanted 4.10s for that reason, good mix of off and on road capability

Just curious if anyone knows if a 96+ explorer with ifs differential will work on my 99. I don't see why not but don't wanna go to the wrecking yard and spend the time if not. Will the housing brackets bolt right up onto my frame?

'97-'01 Explorer housings should bolt right up ('95-'96 had a CAD housing which you don't want).

With 33x10.50s I think you'd be OK running a locker if you treat it nicely. Just know that more than a slight bit of wheelspin with the steering turned is when you're bound to start popping CV joints though.

And FWIW, I have 4.10s & 33s on my '94. It's decent, but much of the time I wish I had 4.56, both offroad and onroad. I'd say go 4.56 and don't look back.

How is it setting up gears? I just was gonna get the 4.10s because it was a stock ratio I can find at the junkyard.. It's cheaper since I don't gotta pay a machinist to set my gears up, I just read if I get it off a tiny bit I'll be chewing the gears up
