Well i got a ticking sound from what sounds like its coming from the engine bay

Some info on it: only dose it while its in gear (btw its a 94 4.0l Auto) and from what i can tell only in 1st and 2nd gear. Not 100% sure about 3rd since speed and road noise could drown it out. It only dose it from 1250-1750 Rpm's any lower or higher and it doesnt do it (weirdly it seems like its range seemed to change it now does it 1100-1600 rpm). Its done it since we got the truck about 2 years ago. It had 14k on the odo when we got it but the guy said it was at 114k (no 100,000's marker).

Could these be the pushrod/rocker arm noise that is common with the 4.0l ohv?

If is there any after market parts that fix this issue?

i know mine makes a hell of a racket when first started. when i crawl under with it running it really does sound like a diesel... lol

Typically the "ticking noise" froma 4.0 is galling of the pushrod tips and
the socket in the underside of the rocker arm.

It isn't a terribly ugly job to make it go away.

is it a bad thing to have? i was under the impression that all 2.9L's and their big cousin the 4L ticked...

i know the 2.9L's have a huge ticking history. my 4.0L does it sometimes. i just disregard it. normal ranger wear really.

Its seems pretty weird, i started it up about 2hrs ago to go do some crap and i noticed it wasnt ticking, about a min later it started. Not the first time ive noticed that. (normally it does it from the start)

So you think it would be the the rocker arms? Im hoping it would be them and not the lifters since rocker arms can be replaced fairly easily.

Is there any after market that would prevent this problem again?

someone sells "rebuilt" rocker arms that have a hardened pushrod socket inserted, but I don't recall who...

and I lost the link in a HDD crash some time ago...

Well if i just went with oem replacement how long would you think it would take for it to develop the tick again?
