Hello all,

My 2003 4.0L Ranger developed a coolant leak from the temp sensors this week. I talked to the Ford parts guy and they said the o-ring only comes with a new sensor and they didn't have the o-ring separately. I took the old one off and took it to NAPA and matched it up...

NAPA part number is 407105

This way you can have the parts on hand before tearing into the thing. I had to take the intake manifold off to get to them but the job was pretty simple. Be careful of the 3/4 inch rubber vacuum line on the pax side of the engine near and below the throttle valve. You'll also need a 1/4 drive T-30 torx to get the intake off. Also use caution when removing the retaining clips as they will go flying and you run the risk of losing them.

Thanks for the info :icon_thumby:

Did those o-rings take care of your leak around the sensors? I have one sensor that needs attention so I was curious, thanks.

Update: I tried that o-ring it didn't help me at all, so I am back to where I was. Sadly this is a brand new housing I bought that came with the upper/lower, the thermostat, and sensors as a package, but one of the sensors doesn't fit tight it's loose.

I may be a dummy; but, why did you have to remove the intake to get to the sensor? I can see that you would have to remove the air tube to the TPS. But, why the intake???

Thanks, Ed

I didn't remove the intake, you don't have to remove it to do the job, you can get to the back bolt with a swivel, but with the intake off it would be easier to remove the housing, or remove or replace the sensors without the obstruction.

OK, let me start over. Why did the OP have to remove the intake to change the sensor o-ring. On a 2003 4L the sensor is held in place with a metal clip and the o-ring seals it (no bolts). Like I said I can see having to remove the air intake tube; but, I don't understand why the intake had to come off. You can see the sensor and clip in the pic.

Sorry yeah you don't need to remove the intake, I am not sure why he did. It's cramped but you can do the job as you said.
