I'm rebuilding the 4.0L in my `93 Ranger. New bearings, pistons, rings, timing set, oil pump and crank polish. I'm having the block bored .020 over and having the machine shop clean the inside and out (Oven baking, bead blasting, rifle brush cleaning and hot tanking) The only thing that isn't getting cleaned are the lifters because I don't know how. Engine has 95,000 miles. I've read where I should be able to "pump" the lifters while submerged in solvent. I cannot get the lifters to compress and they are not collapsed (I read somewhere that this is a good sign so that seems like conflicting information) . How do I clean these dudes so that I know for certain that they will work as expected since I'm making a significant investment in this rebuild. I'd like to pull them apart if I can put them back together without special equipment. I popped the cone off the top of but can figure out how to get the rest apart. Any advice or dissassembly instructions would help.
