I just would like to know if anyone has has success with this swap? I have a 1999 3.0L with the 4spd automatic. The 3.0L has all sorts of metal in the oil pan and I know the transmission will bolt up and work just not sure about the in engine bay harness for the 4.0 plugging into the in cab harness from the 3.0.

the 4.0L is out of a 1997.

trans WILL NOT bolt up.....get that out of your head.....you can plug the 4.0 harness in the main under hood harness

Thanks for the reply

I figured I would be able to plug and pretty much get away with it. I am trying to gauge wether to tackle this now or wait untill spring so I dont take up garage space for other vehicles I need to store. I dont have an entire day to get this done and if I needed to change pins for certain sensor wires I wouldnt get it done for months because I can only work on it in between other jobs. Its only a 4th truck and I need to get my rebuilt 4.0L in the 1997 that I took this old 4.0L from first.

As for the transmission its already bolted to the 4.0L on my hoist. I swapped the bellhousing with the 5R55E that was behind the 4.0L. Im still using the 4R44E PCM thats in the truck. Everything will work out as far as the transmission.

I hope your not using the 3.0L's 4R44E/5R44E transmission behind the 4.0L. (the bellhousings will swap, but its not a good idea) The 4.0L will chew it up. Use the 5R55E behind the 4.0L.

Its hard to understand your post, but if I understand you right.... you really shouldn't be attempting this if your goal is to have the entire project swapped and ready to drive in one day (unless you've done this before and know exactly what to expect).

My main question was will the 4.0L harness plug in and work with the in cab 3.0L harness. The mechanical swapping of the engines and trans wont take much time, but the electrical was in question.

And yes I am using the 4R44E behind the 4.0L. I have to splice in a few wires to the existing 3.0L PCM to bypass the 4.0L PCM for a few functions. The 4.0 had the 5R55E and I just have to bypass the O/D code so the 4 speed doesnt think its a 5 speed and slip/surge between those two shift points that engage that code. Otherwise the 4R44E will hold up, I have done it before with good results. Biggest factor is heat/old fluid that has lost viscosity. I have external coolers on all my trucks plus change the fluid/filter every 10,000 miles. I get long lifes out of all my transmissions, the 1997 I took this 4.0l out of has 195,896 miles and the original 5R55E.
