My 2002 ranger with the 4.0l sohc and automatic transmission gets around 13-14 mpg mixed but mostly city driving. I am wanting to re-gear. The gears i have right now are 3.73 and i was considering doing 4.10's but i am new to the world of axles. My truck has michelin ltx tires which i belive are 30's or 31's (guesstimating). I am not worried for speed or acceleration. All i want is a little truck with good gas milage! so my questions are:
1. My truck is 4x4 so does this mean i would have to buy two sets of gears for the front and rear?
2. What gears do you guys recommend.
3. How much would the average shop charge me to do this change.
THANKS!!!

well. your fawked.

i have to say even mostly city driving you may have a tuning issue with the horrendous mileage and small tires. your gearing is nearly perfect.

Lmao. I can go on average of 190 to 200 miles on a tank of gas. But i dont run it down all the way because when i fill it up it from where i leave it, it says about 14 gallons where used to fill. FML

Wow. I get that kinda mileage in mixed mostly city with 4.10s... on ethanol... with a 3.0... auto.... driving like a dick :D

Oddly, my co-worker has a 2006 Ranger with the SOHC and he hates the 14-15mpg he can only hope he might break with his, city, hiway, not much difference. dunno his gearing, but he has 16" and its all stock, but must have some heavy duty package or something because he has more leaves than my ranger, the rancho shocks, a factroy receiver, and it sits a little higher. It doesn't say "SPORT" or "FX" or anything on it so I dunno what package(s) it might have.

My 4.0L's all have 235/75-15's and 3.73's and i can get between 15-20 depending on how much highway i drive... 3.73'are perfect for the 4.0L...

I leave the "driving like a dick" to be done in my superduty.. where i can actually out run most cars that pull up and i get better mpg's :icon_thumby:
