my 1993 4.0 has a pretty good ticking sound what would cause that

The pushrods and rocker cups are worn. It's common on the 4.0. Oil has a hard time getting there. The pushrods mushroom and the rocker arm cups wear out.

If you want it fixed then you'll need to find the culpriuts and replace them.

What causes ticking? Any reciprocating part with excess clearance. And you have dozens of them in your engine. Injectors, pistons/conn-rods, lifters, rockers, even timing chains.

You can guess or you can try to pinpoint it. Replacing "common" problems is a gamble.

And it's possible for a transmission to tick as well.

A pretty common reason for ticking is carbon buildup on the valves. A few dollars for a seafoam treatment will either fix the problem or eliminate one possiblity.
