Automatic
Hello, my auto trans is going out in my ranger, so Ive Been looking to get a used one to throw into it. I was told 5 speed transmissions are good for off roading so I thought I would see if I could find one. My question I'm having is what do I have to do to make this possible. I have a stock 2.9 ranger and a stock 4.0 4x4 ranger. I think the bell housing will match up but idk about the transfer case and driveshafts. Could someone please let me know what I'm going to be getting myself into and if It would be easier/better to put an automatic back in. Any information will help me.

Thanks

Trans will bolt to engine. Crossmember should be in the right spot, and drive shaft lengths should also be correct.

All Ranger transfer cases fit all Rangers. The only problem there is trying to put a t-case on a 2wd trans.

I'm running a 2.9 M5OD behind my 4.0. It does just fine. But I got lucky, one came in my B2.

The T-case issue is a bit more complicated as on 1990-up there is little point to using
a 13-50 T-case from an earlier truck.

And there is only ONE shifter setup for the 13-50 T-case that
fits & functions (And it's really gotta do both) on the Mazda trans.

ONLY the Mazda trans will survive behind a 4.0 for long enough to bother
installing it.

and as a recap the Mazda trans is the one without any kind of "bottom cover"

Then I must have one. Cause I'm runnin a 1350m behind my M5OD. I think its one for an A4LD.

The specific 13-50 shifter designed for the Mazda trans will work on
both the FM146 and the A4LD.

But ford had surplus shifters from 1985.5-? to use up.

ONE of the A4LD shifters works on the FM146, but as I said there is ONE shifter that works on the 13-50.

This shifter can be identified by looking at it "end on"
(as viewed from the front or back as it sould be installed on the trans...)

If the lever goes "Straight off the top" of the side swivel it won't work on the MAzda. the mazda leven has a "dogleg" on the lever below the guide plate.
