I need to change the transmission in my truck. I think that is a given with the multiple symptoms I'm having. So I started looking for a "good" used trans that I could use until I either overhaulled my old one or found a rebuilt trans from a reputable builder. I have toyed with the idea of trying to do the rebuild myself. But that is another thread. I found a 93 Aeorstar trans that has P95 7AO4O BAR on the tail piece. My truck has P92 7AO4O AAR on it. Are they interchangeable? I checked the Tech section and find Explorer and Bronco II info but not on the Aerostar.

If you don't mind the drive to Fort Worth I know of a junkyard that will have the transmission for your truck.

Thanks kryptonictecb for the reply. My question is sort of "after the fact". I have already purchased the trans in question. I am just hoping now that it is the right one. But I am a junk yard junkie so if you don't mind I would like to have the name of the yard.

The difference in the Aerostar A4LD transmissions is typically the shift arm for the gear selector

Hopefully I can replace the linkage with mine from the truck. I have the "new" transmission on my engine stand with the pan off. I intend to replace the seals on both ends before I put it back in (of course with a new filter). But is there anything else I can do to it short of a rebuild to give me a better chance of success? I am torn about buying a new torque converter and putting it on a used transmission. If the transmission is producing metal shavings (and I don't see any in the pan) will it trash a new torque converter?

The shift arm is "pinned" into the case the pin is a solid steel pin driven into a blind hole down in one of the Grooves in the pan rail.

Thanks AllanD for the reply but I am still green enough on transmissions to know if you are telling me that it can be changed or not.

The one I recommend in Fort Worth is Dismantlers 2000 off 121. They are more late model oriented which keeps prices way down. And they advertise $50 you pull it axles, I can find 8.8's, a few 9", and rear tons all day. Only d30 fronts from the few jeeps that still have front axles under them. If you head up this way for whatever reason I can show you the yards I prefer.

I might be taking you up on that. As soon as I find out if the trans I have is going to work or not.

There are a few others in grapevine but none as cheap as Dismantlers 2000.

Thanks. That is clear enough. So am I right to think that a 93 Explorer trans would work? Or will the shifter be different on it also?
