Hello folks. I'm swapping my transmission in my 1990 Ford ranger 4.0. My A4LD went to crap, no reverse and leaking out of everywhere. So I'm switching to a m5r1, so far it looks as if I don't need a new driveshaft. It looks just swap and drop, is this true?

As long as both are 4x4 it should be. I mean you'll be bolting the same transfer case on the back right?

Lots of M5ODs came with electric transfer cases anyway. My 88 came with an FM146 (pre-M5OD manual) and an electric transfer case.

The auto transfer case and hubs does have it's advantages when maintained. Especially if you find yourself stuck before you realize you need 4x4.

My transfer case is a manual shifter.
Don't mind the carpet I was ripping it out at the time.

NICE! That was an interesting combo off the line...

FYI, a cheap wood holesaw will make good hole for the shifter in that plate. It's a little noisy and you might wanna prop a 2x6 up underneath it for support, but you don't have to take it out that way.

My trucks hella nice
XLT lariat long bed. Tow pack and all the accessories still work partly.

Also I forgot to mention.
I'm just gonna take a donor plate cleaner more OEM look.

You should post some pics of this truck.

It sat for seven years so it's not too pretty.
It's got a 3 inch lift and 31 inch tires.
The hood doesn't fully close.

Looks better than my truck. I'm seeing some rust holes on mine now.

That hood SHOULD be an easy fix. Just some working with that latch and maybe the bumpers in the corners.

Yeah I don't know very much about trucks and cars. This is my learner truck, so.far it's been fairly easy. The valve covers are a pain in the butt though, hidden under everything.
Gonna be painting them navy blue before I put them on.

Right on. I did the same.

If you're doing a manual transmission swap and calling it fairly easy you can handle just about anything that truck can throw at you.

It starts here.

Basically a junkyard engine swap, with all new gaskets, and a rocker/pushrod set.

That's the second 4.0 in my truck. I bought it with a 2.9 that was in pieces. The first 4.0 had 174,000 miles when I swapped it in. It made it another 210,000 with minimal maintenance. I hope this one does the same.
