would an 88 2.9l tranny work in a 94 4.0l and if will what mods would need to be done

I know that the tranny will line up but one difference is that the 88 has the shifter on the floor where the 94 has it on the column. I am sure some kind of modification would have to take place.

Well he didn't say auto or manual. Either way a 2.9 A4LD is weaker than a 4.0 A4LD and I wouldn't even advise an A4LD behind a 2.9. The manual in the 88 would be a FM-146 and is the same length as the A4LD and M5OD, it is also much weaker than an M5OD and won't last long. They will both bolt up however.

Forget it... too weak (as said, they're marginal behind the 2.9L already)
Find a M5OD for it.

It maybe a M5OD MR1 i have a 1988 Ranger that came out with a M5OD behind a 2.9.
