okay so my last ranger caught on fire and now i just picked up a 94 ranger XLT 4.0 5spd. the owner said he was driving the truck and it just died and he believes its the timing chain. my 1st question is does the 4.0 have an interference head? second how bad is it to change the timing chain? and 3rd (since i just got the truck to my house tonite) what do you guys suggest i do/check out first??

the 4.0 is non-interference.

pull a valve cover and turn the motor over by hand. if the rockers dont move you need a chain.

I myself have never heard of a timeing chain issue on a OHV 4.0 not saying it isn't possible. I agree check for valve movement as suggested, but if ok my guess would be fuel or spark related.

Put a fuel pressure guage on it and cycle the key acouple times you should have around 45lbs pressure.

If no spark, It could be the crank position sensor.
