I have a '90 ranger with a 4.0 and A4LD, motor is junk. I just bought a good running 4.0 out of a 91 ranger with a manual trans. Will I have any issues with timing and such if I swap in the good longblock for the old one?

No. It would be nice to use the trans as well but, then you would have to use the computer and harness.
The motor it self has no difference though.

I would like to switch it over to the manual trans, maybe at a later date and time. I might try to get the computer and trans if they don't want an arm and a leg for it.

You would also need the floor plate, pedal assembly, Ctutch master and hose. Oh, and the wiring harness for the motor and trans.

Well, I picked up the engine today from the junk yard, I really hate dealing with those dicks. I was debating on just throwing it in the truck and selling it. But once I came to my senses, I decided that I'll tear it down, take it in to my machine shop to get it hot-tanked and inspected, and build my truck a nice new engine. I found a free-floating rocker kit, probably get a radical comp cam, accel coil pack, port the intakes, I'm getting excited just thinking about it. Any insight from the 4.0 guys would be appreciated.

Well I got the engine tore down. All the internals are super clean for 130K miles. Even the push rods look good. I'm trying to figure out which comp cam to buy, the 49-410-8 or the 49-422-8. I want my power in the 2000 to 4000 range. Anyone running one of these cams, or another aftermarket cam? Does anyone know if the rocker assemblies are the same on the 2.9 and 4.0? Camcraft makes roller rockers and rocker spacers for the 2.9, and I was wondering if they work on the 4.0 as well. If anyone has a 2.9 rocker assembly laying around and could get me some measurements, I could compare the two.

Oh, and the wiring harness for the motor and trans.
sorry but you are wrong.....you don't HAVE to have the wiring harness....you can splice 2 sets of 2 wires together and make everything work fine with the auto tranny wiring harness..

Hmmmmmm

(1) you shoulda just stuck the motor in there . . .

(2) go to www.deltacam.com - they will grind whatever you want. They have flame hardened rocker arms with inserts and flame hardened pushrods.

Yeah, with a cracked oil pan and wore out bearings. Come on, seriously? Thanks for the link, I'll have to check that place out sometime. Anyways, I'm going with the 49-422-8 comp cam. The valve train looks good, and I'm going with the free-floating rockers, so this should take care of the top-end oiling deficiency.
